► (1911-97) Químico estadounidense. Fue premio Nobel de Química en 1961 por sus investigaciones sobre la fotosíntesis.

Bioquímico estadounidense. Obtuvo su Ph.D. en la Universidad de Minnesota. Desarrolló un sistema para usar el isótopo radiactivo carbono 14 como elemento marcador en sus estudios del alga verde chlorella. Al detener el metabolismo del alga en diferentes etapas y medir pequeñas cantidades de compuestos radiactivos, pudo identificar la mayoría de las reacciones implicadas en los pasos intermedios de la fotosíntesis, por lo cual se le otorgó un Premio Nobel en 1961. También investigó en la química de las radiaciones y en los procesos que conducen al origen de la vida.
